Our Training Philosophy

In training a horse, there’s nothing more important than understanding how the horse sees the world he finds himself in. Horses are simple creatures. To be happy, they need food, companionship, and some room to play. As prey animals, their strongest instinct is to flee any scary or even questionable situation.  So in order to ride them in stressful situations, their learned trust of their rider must overcome the strong basic instinct to run.

At Heavensgait Farm our foals learn from day one that the humans around them will not harm them. They are handled, played with, reprimanded fairly when necessary (just as they will be out in the herd), and generally taught not to fear the sights and sounds of the world they will be living in.

The life our horses lead is as close to a natural one as we can make it. They respond with trust for their human companions and an uninhibited curiosity that makes learning a game for them.

Their personalities become as familiar to us as our children’s.  As we watch them grow we begin to see hints of the horses they will become, the special talents or traits they display. This close relationship is why our horses are truly “the ultimate equine companions.”
